Before attending the CLYMACT Project, my understanding of energy poverty was mostly theoretical. I viewed it as a distant problem, only discussed in economic or technical spheres. However, CLYMACT had a fundamentally different approach, by emphasising social and human aspects of energy poverty. I realized how this problem is not a local issue faced by one household; it’s a global issue that is affecting families all around the world.
The CLYMACT Project held in Athens, Greece, brought together delegates from 5 European countries, such as Hungary, Italy, Croatia, Greece, and Spain. It was truly an honour for me to represent Hungary in this international gathering, and share with me my personal experience as a student who rents an apartment in an old building in Budapest. On the first day of the project, each delegation presented its local experience of energy poverty at the Municipality of Agioi Anargyro-Kamatero. During the presentations, I noticed differences in the main causes of the problem in each country, as well as in the ways they approach the issue. However, I also observed common patterns such as rising energy costs, limited access to sustainable solutions, and a shared focus on vulnerable populations.
The CLYMACT Project created a space where these international experiences could meet. Through group work, open dialogue, and presentations, participants compared realities and shared challenges. On the second day of the project, we visited Harokopio University of Athens, where we worked in mixed groups from different countries to prepare presentations on solutions to energy poverty. This collaboration and exchange of information helped to shift the perception of energy poverty from local to a shared global concern requiring collective responsibility and action.
A key strength of the CLYMACT Project was its focus on awareness as a foundation for action. The project emphasized the social impact and the way energy poverty affects vulnerable groups and exacerbates social inequalities. This human-centered approach encouraged participants to move toward accountability and practical engagement.
This project positioned young people not only as learners but as individuals capable of making a change. During the group discussions and presentation preparations, we developed creative approaches and applied our fresh, youthful perspectives to address the challenges of energy poverty.
The CLYMACT Project in Athens, Greece, was an unforgettable experience for me. I left the project feeling inspired and motivated, seeing firsthand how international youth can drive change. It also made me realize the significance of energy poverty, both in our daily lives and on a broader global scale.
