BRAIN BAR 2023 - BRAIN BAR 2023 - BRAIN BAR 2023

Brain Bar Festival 2023
Topics we covered:
Topic 1: Climate Justice
  • Significant interest in understanding how to link local and national climate issues to broader international political structures as well as understanding how international climate policy translates into the local arena.

  • Further conversation on the reconciliation of individual actions and collective action, exploring the impact of the fossil fuel lobby, historic responsibility, the legacies of colonialism and how these all interact with policy developments such as Loss and Damage. Keen interest in understanding how to be a part of a broader collective movement through advocacy, policy-making and activism.

  • Recognising the limitations of international policy making bodies in combating the climate crisis, pointing out the flaws in carbon offsetting mechanisms, carbon trading initiatives and highlighting that justice-centered approaches are needed to prevent the replication of an oppressive economic structure that simply markets itself as ‘green’

Summary:

  • Join the movement! Hungary has local Greenpeace and Fridays for Future chapters as well as other climate justice organizations that build communities in the fight for climate justice. Otherwise EU-wide organisations like Generation Climate Europe are regularly opening recruitment for volunteers
  • Follow Generation Climate Europe on social media to stay up to date with our policy work
  • Endorse the Fossil Fuel Non Proliferation Treaty

Topic 2: AI Safety
  • Enhancing biosecurity, limiting AI model access, and holding developers accountable are crucial steps to curb potential harm from powerful AIs.

  • Recognizing AIs’ growing autonomy, it’s vital to guard against rogue AIs with harmful goals – think teachers worrying about job security due to AIs outcompeting humans and concerns about manipulation and disinformation.

  • Considering AI’s persuasive role in disinformation, proactive measures are needed to prevent large-scale manipulation and societal instability.

  • Contemplating AI replacing human labor, enforcing safety standards, data transparency, and exploring public control become key to managing the potential fallout.

  • Addressing AI in the military demands human oversight, strong cyberdefense, and global coordination to ensure responsible AI development in this critical domain.

Summary:

  • Join the BudAI AGI safety fellowships to learn more about the topics

Topic 3: Talent Management
  • Thinking about talent in general is very challenging, but if we narrowed it down to a specific role, task or profession, participants could describe exactly who they consider to be outstanding, talented in that area, and the skills that person might possess.

  • Talent development combines innate abilities with social influences and personal efforts in education. For example, becoming a leader, singer, or language learner involves natural gifts, a supportive environment, and training in necessary skills and techniques.

  • The discussions highlighted that beyond large educational systems, mentoring and peer support significantly impact individual development. It is crucial for experienced individuals to share their knowledge and experiences with less experienced counterparts.

Summary:

  • School is of crucial importance in activating young talents, therefore a society that imagines itself as having good experts in many fields, and outstanding individuals in certain domains, must place a great emphasis on education, on the reinforcing and equalising role of secondary socialisation. Participants also value education, training themselves and others in general, as they also considered youth should fight for getting a good education and training.
  • By having certain skills, young people can also become more experienced, thus youth can also pass on their knowledge and experience, therefore supporting each other – individually, in a community and in society – is essential.

Topic 4: Healthcare 3.0
  • Younger generation aged (18-30) are more keen or even excited about the new wave of technological adaptation than their older counterpart (>30).

  • Regardless of age distinction, race, background, knowledge, every participant (24/24) has shown varying degrees of interest in learning more on how to better equip themselves mentally and literally to handle technology. Along that, there’s also a spiking concern with reliable tech literacy being expressed by 62,5% (15/24) participants in the education system or on the internet. Out of that, all participants with a medical background shared the same concern.

  • It was also found that technology in healthcare was enforced onto individuals in most countries by either their government or their medical institutions, thereby, consumer-patients with IT background 12,5% (3/24) expressed worries that they have little to no control over their data privacy and security.

  • After the introduction of Healthcare 3.0 (functions and benefits), there were 2 initiations of potential collaboration from representatives of 2 different healthcare organizations in Vietnam and Indonesia. And 1 potential partnership with a representative from The National Authority for Data Protection and Freedom of Information in Hungary with Medi.co resulting in 12,5% (3/24) of collaborative interest.

Summary:

  • For everyone, subscribe to Medi.co Newsletter to keep up to date with the latest trends, tools, and opportunities in Medical Technology and healthcare, like our Care Package (HERE)
  • More initiations in digital literacy across all sectors for youth, especially in Healthcare and Education
  • Inclusivity in digital literacy education for the elderly, or older generations
