Last year, we publicly recognised and celebrated young leaders and changemakers who are making a positive social impact in their local community.
This award is a collaboration between the GiLE Foundation and the Hungarian National Commission for UNESCO.
There are normally two category winners for the Changemakers Impact Award:
Congratulations to Munch for winning the youth-led organisation award category. The award was received by Virág Bélavári.
On a regional level, Munch is the only initiative that links food waste as an environmental problem with social responsibility through charitable activities while actively involving not only donors but also people in need. Munch’s aim is to minimise food waste in the regions we’re present in by increasing social participation, while also promoting solidarity and social responsibility. We’re working on reducing the alienation that characterizes cities, as every customer at Munch goes to pick up their food in person and can learn about avoiding food waste on out platforms. We’re also actively building several online communities; we’ve created a Facebook for every bigger city we operate in, our most frequented group counts 30000+ members. Here, users can share their Munch experiences and give each other tips on sustainability.
A person who regularly uses Munch can save up to 20.000-25.000 HUF per month, as for our food service provider partners, they would not only lose the selling price of the food but would also have to bear the cost of transporting the leftovers. The extra income provides a secure source of income in the long term, helping small family businesses stay around for the long run.
Congratulations to Márton Elődi for winning the individual award category.
Since March of 2022, Márton has been part of and managing multiple projects that aim to support Ukrainian refugees who fled their country and currently reside in Hungary.
From the middle of March until the end of May, he built up and managed the largest refugee shelter in Hungary, which became the primary destination for all people who were transiting in Budapest. Running a refugee shelter is not something that you can learn at school or online, therefore he had to improvise and tackle hundreds of challenges daily to ensure that everything runs smoothly.
In order to keep the enormous momentum of the volunteers at the shelter, they decided to keep them all together and created their own volunteer community, Hahó Volunteers, which he has been leading since its foundation. They have a simple goal to offer effective help in various social issues across Hungary.
